Day 8: A Reset on the Year

A reset on the year

Most years, I spend the week between Christmas and New Years in reflection and planning mode. At the end of 2020/beginning of 2021 though, I was focused on my mom's care. My time with her took priority.

It has been odd to discover things throughout 2021 that I've come to rely on happening during that time. One example - I typically clean my refrigerator - tossing out things with expired dates and scrubbing all the shelves and drawers. I finally did this a couple of weeks ago when a jar was stuck to one of the shelves. (It has happened to all of us.)

While not the same amount of time, I'm trying to spend the long weekend of July 4th getting refocused on my priorities and values - going through at least a small version of the typical visioning and planning I do at the beginning of the year.

This is a reset to what has been a really rough year. However, it may also be the birth of a new tradition - one that allows me to re-center in the middle of the year.

It's a nice point to thoroughly check in on progress and a time to make some seismic changes in my productivity systems. I chase shiny objects all the time and will try any new app or tool that I run across. Perhaps if I have time set aside to tweak and hone my existing systems the draw towards all those new tools would not be quite so magnetic.

How do you reset when your routines are disrupted?
